Bobsongs Music (Royalty Free Music) - Review by Ben Burfield


The debate over what n-c film makers can and cannot use from the world of
copyright music continues but one thing is sure, outside the USA we have to
have copyright clearance or use royalty free or buy out music. This is not
copyright free music as someone always owns the copyright, this is music
where the copyright owner agrees to let the original purchaser use the music
without additional fees.


This is a crowded and expensive world with major libraries offering a
tremendous selection of music but at a price. It is a pleasure to come
across a small library that offers a decent selection at a very reasonable
price and with three CDs available Bobsongs Music looks as if it is here to
stay.


"Music 4 Movies" is a healthy 16 tracks totaling 56 minutes with run times
from 1:44 to 6:26. Each track is a full length piece, no :30/:60 versions
and stings. If you want these you have to extract them yourself, not a bad
thing. This is music that is generally up front and original, music to cut
to rather than to be used as background wallpaper. The instrumentation is
predominantly synthesized but acceptably so.


The other two CDs, "Direction" (12 tracks/41 minutes) and "Out of the
Darkness" (14 tracks/ 47 minutes) offer a variety of styles; jazz, ballad,
rock and techno. "Out of the Darkness" is heavy on rhythm and short on
melody so will tend to have a more restricted use. "Direction" is more
upbeat and with a strongly common style so the various tracks could be used
throughout a production.


Obviously not every track will meet with the users approval but there is
enough here to find tracks that will meet a need. The quality of the
recordings is good, and well packaged with adequate information.
A useful addition to any movie
makers royalty free library. Recommended.
